For those who have been keeping up with the Medicaid cuts here in Alaska, it was recently announced that the state of Alaska will reinstate adult preventative dental services for Medicaid recipients. This is great news for those who rely on medicaid and cannot afford dental care on their own.

This past summer medicaid was cut from the state budget, meaning dental offices that accepted mediciad as a form of payment would no longer be able to bill the program. This made it difficult to help those who truely needed this type of help. Medicaid’s emergency dental program was still funded but it was the preventative portion that was being cut.

For those who had to have a procedure like tooth extractions that caused pain, this was still covered. The preventative side would cover things like teeth cleanings, fluoride, fillings and root canals. The purpose of preventative dental care is to help save teeth or the overall health of the mouth so that things like tooth extractions would not be needed later in life.
